Nov 1. We had a good night's rest, then got up and started packing. That was quite an operation--to get all the suitcases into the car and camper again. But we finally managed to get everything in again. Then we had breakfast (hamburgers) and got on the way.
We got to Rosas and slept beside the road on a turn-off. The kids had fun damming up a little stream even though it was sprinkling. I fixed macaroni and cheese in the camper.
Nov 2. Had breakfast beside the road--bread and jelly and bananas--though it didn't fill very much. We drove on over the gravel. The road was so up and down and curvy that I fought all morning to keep from throwing up. We stopped about 11:00 at Mercadores for lunch. We were all famished, and filled up on a simple but good meal.
Kept on with our weary journey of up and downs and arounds and painfully slow. The road is pretty good gravel, but the mountain roads have such steep grades and sharp curves that we had to travel quite slowly. Then in the afternoon during a good rain, we had to stop for a road block. It was on an upgrade. Ken had to stop because we couldn't make it through the soft mud. When the way was cleared, we couldn't move. No power at all. Some of the workers started pushing and we got out and pushed too. It didn't look as though we were going to make it in the pouring rain and slippery mud. But with the Lord's help, we did.We were so worn out that we were only too glad to eat at a salchicheria in Pasto. We got in during a good rain, and were already dripping from our road experience. What fun. Were kind of disappointed in the small order of salchichas, but we divided it up between us. Drove to a Shell station and parked at the parking lot just behind. It was good to have a dry place to park and restrooms available.
