Nov 28. From Puno we took off about 7:30 in the morning. We had our breakfast at the hotel and then left. The road runs around the edge of lake Titicaca mostly. There are a number of little towns. Juli is one of the bigger ones along the way. And all these little towns are up on knolls so that you have sharp little climbs and then down on the other side again, and then you run along more or less level with the lake most of the time. We got to Desaguadero after lunch.
Desaguadero is a very picturesque little place where the river runs out of the lake right at the mouth of the river practically, and there are a lot of sailboats parked on both sides of the river with the flags of the countries they belong to. We got to the gate, and the man sent us back into town (Desaguadero), and there we had to get all our clearances for leaving. Then we crossed the bridge at about 3:15 and got over into the Bolivian side of Desaguadero.
This is about the easiest frontier we've had to cross. They just took the numbers of our passports and noted us down and then took the [...] next to the car and filled out the stub and that was it.
We drove on and got all the way to El Alto. It was already dark when we got there, and we had to stop a couple places to check in with the authorities along the way (which is quite a nuisance). But anyway, we got to El Alto and decided not to go down into the city with the trailer. So we found a little restaurant right near the begining of the road down the lip of the canyon and had some asados which the kids enjoyed very much--which were very reasonable. After that we went back the road a ways until we found a side road that went parallel with the highway along the airlines there, and we parked on that and set up our tent just as it was begining to rain. It had rained a little on us on the way, but not enough to bother us or to make the road too bad.
