Oct 14. We drove all morning till we crossed el Rio [Lempo]. Just on the other side, some women were selling filled sugared donuts and a cheesecake-like pastry. We stopped and ate them along the road while we hung the clothes out to dry. It was terribly hot, though humid and no wind, so it took about an hour for the clothes to dry. Meanwhile, I did a sketch of the countryside under a tree.

Drove on and passed through [Coatepeque] where we stopped to buy some fruit. The people just crowd up to and almost into the car all through here when you stop. They really cheated me at that place--charged more than double the value of the fruit.
What Dad didn't know was that, as soon as he left the car,
we would make faces back at the people staring at us. We'd stick our
fingers in our cheeks and stretch them out, chanting "Funny face is
fun to drink."
In the afternoon we got to San Miguel where we all had popsicles. Took the Military Route instead of the InterAmerican, which was 100% better. Bought some bread and cakes there. I thought I'd left my glasses somewhere, so we turned back, but found the glasses on the dash after getting into town.
We got to the border just at 5:00 and had to pay extra to get across. Had no trouble at all. They didn't even look at the things on either side. T.T.L.
We stayed at a "motel" just on the Honduran side of the border--a Shell station. Had a room with 2 cots. Really primitive, but clean. Four kids slept in the camper, the rest with us. We cooked spaghetti for supper and ate the cucumbers Ken had bought that morning. Delicious! Had a good night's rest in spite of a heavy downpour during the night. Also had showers.
