Nov 24. Yesterday morning Ruth and the three younger girls took off to Bolivia by plane. They should be in Cochabamba tonight. Will probably go to Santa Cruz tomorrow morning, and then use the litorina train from there.
Well, here we are, just south of Nasca. We've had a good trip today--made about 470 km. Started out about 9:00 from the Bible Institute in Lima, which, by the way, was where we were staying the whole time--thanks to the courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Roth who allowed us to camp out on their grounds there.
From there the highway is good all the way til you get to Ica. From Ica to Nasca is a nasty little piece of highway. Most of it is narrow and bumpy. Coming into Nasca it gets a little better, but it's still not too good a highway. In places I had to go about 30 mph.
Just before getting into Nasca, right in front of us, a truck that was in front of us coming toward us crossed the road (to his left) and went into a deep ditch. It looked like the car was going to do a summersault end over end, but he came to rest there, and the driver crawled out. He was empty (no cargo fortunately) and he [ ] the truck sitting on one corner, back wheel in the air. He seemed to be quite drunk. He thought I should pull him out with my car and get him out of the ditch (this was maybe a 4-ton truck).
Well, we're going to sleep in the car tonight. We just had out supper consisting of about 2 sandwiches each of either jam or peanut butter. Lunch was sandwiches of sardines with lettuce and tomato, which wasn't bad at all. Of course our breakfast this morning was oatmeal with mora. Tomorrow we hope to have eggs.
It's now about 7:30, and it's gotten dark already, and we've pulled off the highway near what appears to be a pumping station for an hacienda or something.
