Oct 1. We were across the border into Mexico by 9:30. That's when the lios began. Because we didn't have Tourist cards, we had to go through a 2 hour reprocessing to get tourist classification. When we finally left there and got to the immigration station 20 miles farther on, we had to return to Piedras Negras because they hadn't put the children on the documents. Groan. But we did get on the road at last and drove through the Mexican countryside all day. For lunch we stopped along the road after buying some delicious french rolls and had sandwiches. For supper we again pulled off the road into a field and cooked macaroni.
A truck drove up as we were finishing supper and the jolly driver warned us about camping there all night because we had chosen a spot between two taverns. After supper, we drove on till we got to Saltillos about 9:00 p.m. We drove around some good mountain curves getting there and saw a spectacular sunset. Only one cow tried to move into the road as we drove up but it turned away.
Saltillos is 4,500 feet up surrounded by mountains, and has a beautiful climate. We had a good rest all night after finding the Quinta Colina Trailer Court which has warm showers.
