Sept 29. The weather was beautiful until 5 a.m. when it started to rain. We packed up quickly and drove on in the rain. Ate breakfast south of White City at a rest area. We drove to Carlsbad Caverns and took the 1:15 hour tour at 11:00 a.m. It was fascinating, and all of us enjoyed it. Drove into Carlsbad and ate chili at the city park there. Then we went to Sears and bought Perma Prest pants for the boys and a dress for Marty. Drove to [Balmorhea] State Park for supper and to camp. Almost the only campers there. Got there too late to swim, but had good hot showers. We all took baths and washed our hair. Had a good night's sleep under a full moon and beautiful weather.
Sept 30. Got up at 6:00 a.m. and had breakfast just in time to get in the car before a big dust storm hit us. Gordie was still hitching the trailer, so he got it full blast.
We drove all day till we got to Eagle Pass in the afternoon. It was 6:00 by their time, and the stores were almost all closed. We bought a few groceries and shoes for Marty, plus encargos for Lois. Found a nice motel for $6.00/room and took one room. We all took showers and had hamburgers for supper. Then we bought all the ingredients for banana splits and took it to the room where we all gorged ourselves. Called George and Carol and Mama and Papa that night to say good-bye. We had a good night's sleep.
