Sunday, Oct 23. We took it easy and took our time getting up and away. Ate bread in the room with jam. Had our devotions together and then left. We had a short stretch of good road, then back on the gravel again. What a road!! That was about the worst stretch so far.
In the afternoon, we had to stop out in the country because the tires of the trailer had something wrong. The left could be patched. So Ken and Gordie changed tires and patched in the rain that started while I heated some beans. We had stopped just in front of a house. They had 8 eggs they were willing to sell me. So they were added to the beans. This we ate from the common pan in the back of the car. Finally, all was ready and we started on our way again.
After the asphalt stretch, the gravel road to [Sona] wasn't quite as bad as the first stretch. We got in about 9:00, thoroughly worn out. Ken asked permission to park at a Shell station, which was given. Made camp and fell in.
Oct 24. After a good night's rest in spite of the yelling of drunks through a good part of it, we got up. Lovely hot morning. I spread the wet clothes out when possible in the hopes of drying them. Most of them did dry, which was a relief.
It was marvelous to get on a fairly good road again after the day before's driving. It wasn't nearly as good as the stretch right after the border, but infinitely better than the gravel stretch, and we made good time.
Drove all day and got to Panama City in the afternoon. We had to drive through the city during rush hour to get out to the place where the Jenkins lived. After driving past and inquiring several times, we finally located their house, high on a hill just past the continental divide.
After we set up the camper outside, the Jenkins came home and said it was OK to stay there. They gave us the key to the guest house, but we were already set up for camping, so stayed where we were.
